  • Humor me Cleveland!
  • Drew Carey is the new Bob Barker. What is the price of a new fresh limburger cheese today?

Proof of a distinct conflict of interest between PD publisher Terrance Z Eggar's seat on the Cleveland Clinics Board of Directors is found in the Plain Dealer lead editorial KEEPING FAITH printed Sunday October 14, 2007.

Begging and cajoling new Ohio Governor Ted Strickland to provide further funds via ODOT to continue the feasibility study for extending interstate highway 490 to Cleveland Clinic, University Hospital, and University Circle, via an "Opportunity Corridor." This red herring road is being pimped out by the PD and its legion of cheerleaders, most notably PD architectural critic Steve Litt.

The distance between UC, UH, and CC via the current eastbound Carnegie Avenue exit from the interbelt highway in downtown Cleveland is less than four miles to the CC and no more than six miles to UC via the current existing city street routes.

    Do the math!

More attention should be spent in keeping citizens in the city, not giving them one more quick highway exit to run to the beckoning suburbs! Dubbed the "forgotten triangle" by the PD in an attempt to devaluate the current property values, thus paving the way for the land speculators and opportunists that would follow the ousting of current property owners.

This land grab notion is a messy and risky business, and not one that a major newspaper should take an active role in. One only has to study the effects of the fifty odd years of interstate highway systems on all American cities to document the negative role of automobiles in the demise of our cities.

    Just say no Governor Ted!

Will Drew Carey further age to a riper cheese, perhaps a morbier in becoming a host for the Miss America television shenanigans in years to come?

The most conspicuous empty space in need of development in downtown Cleveland is the embarrassing northwest quadrant of Public Square currently occupied by a surface parking lot for the past ten years. Only a true rube town would allow such an eyesore as a parking lot to occupy a quarter of the Square.

Perhaps we should rename the Public Square a Public Triad till this glaring planning error is corrected.

Spent part of this glorious autumn day on Lake Erie fishing for yellow perch on a head boat with my buddy the cheeze and twenty three other Cleveland fishheads.

Cheeze packed no lunch for our five hour piscatory adventure, and was scolded mightily by the head boat Captain Gobi when he produced a banana for his meager repast.

Gobi chided the cheeze mightily explaining that "It is bad luck to bring a banana on a fishing boat, and that the bananas presence causes a volatile electric shock wave to run up the fishing lines of all present rendering all fishing efforts kaput."

Gobi proved prophetic in this case, going to the effort of tossing the bananas skin overboard, and the cheeze did not take another perch for the remainder of the afternoon. This may sound like a fish tale, though I witnessed this "banana fish tale" with my own ears.

I wish I had a copy of the J.D. Salinger short story collection that contains his sad A PERFECT DAY FOR BANANA FISH, but I do not have one in our inventory at this time.

In the hope of selling a fishing book to help defray the cost of the perch expedition we offer a copy of the immortal Dixie Carroll's LAKE AND STREAM GAME FISHING for your autumn biblio fishing.

Though penned by Carroll in 1917, one of the nicest features of fishing is that fish and humans that chase 'em haven't changed tactics all that much. Same can be said for political and entertainment figures and the "fish" they hope to catch and fry.

Hats off to Harry Barber who had a great Dixieland sendoff this past Saturday and was a great fan of a fish fry, Kim, and John. All of our parents who can use our love and attention. Especially my very own 81 year old Mother who cooked the first Lake Erie perch to cross my palate.

    Thank you Mom!

Cleveland American League Tribe looking pretty good in the ALCS though do not count your World Series chickens before they hatch. Boston still dangerous even down three games to one.

    Go Tribe!
